What are the possibilities of redesigning one piece of jewelry into another?
While it varies project-to-project, the possibilities of turning one piece of jewelry into another are often endless. We can redesign one piece into the same category with a new design, for instance an old ring into a redesigned new ring, or we can create something new altogether.
We can turn rings into necklaces, necklaces into bracelets, and so on and so forth. Keep in mind though, that when it comes to recycling old materials, depending on what is to be created we may need to source new materials to include in the production.
How long does the redesign process take?
The amount of time a redesign project takes really depends on the situation at hand. If the design is already confirmed, creating the piece can take from a few days up until a few weeks, depending on the complexity of the job.
Do you take on redesign jobs with any gemstones? Will you take on redesign jobs with softer gemstones like turquoise or opal?
Our gemologists can redesign any type of gemstone. Once the design for the new piece is planned out, our expert gem cutter will first determine which angles on the gemstone will offer the best light return. Then, a handheld faceter is used to make precise cuts in the predetermined critical angles of the gemstone. The finished product is something that fits the redesign perfectly and maximizes the sparkle of the piece.
It’s also important to mention the added risk factor in altering softer or more delicate gemstones. Softer gemstones, such as pearl, amber, or malachite only rank in the 2.5-4 range on the Mohs Hardness scale, while diamond (the hardest gemstone) ranks at a 10. Softer gemstones are more susceptible to scratches, abrasions, or fractures. For these reasons, a redesign project using softer gemstones may carry more risk, can often take longer, and is more laborious.
Will you take on redesign jobs with softer metals, like rose gold or white gold?
Our expert jewelers are capable of taking on a redesign job with any metal or karat. It’s important to note though, that potential difficulties do come with working certain metals in the recycling/restyling process.
Certain metals, such as rose gold, are created by combining different alloys into a finished product. With these metals, recycling them into a new piece can sometimes prove difficult.
